JUST IN: Abuja steel company linked to stolen manhole covers

Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have identified Abuja Steel Company as a suspected receiver of stolen sewage manhole covers recently vandalized across Abuja highways. The company, located along the Abuja-Kaduna Road, is under investigation after security agencies recovered items of interest believed to be linked to the stolen infrastructure. The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, disclosed that the exhibits are now in police custody. Ongoing investigations are focusing on the company’s role, alongside other suspects, in the removal, purchase, and melting of the manhole covers. This development comes after the FCT Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) apprehended individuals allegedly involved in the vandalism. The suspects are reportedly providing critical information about the sale and distribution network of the stolen items. In a swift response to the incidents, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, directed the immediate replacement of the vandalized manhole covers. The replacement exercise began yesterday as part of efforts to restore safety and order across the city’s road network. The FCT Administration has reaffirmed its commitment to combating infrastructure vandalism and bringing all culprits to justice. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
