Police nabs 17 over lynching of alleged witchcraft suspect

The Ebonyi State Police Command has apprehended 17 individuals in connection with the lynching of a man accused of witchcraft in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo North Local Government Area. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed in a statement that the tragic incident occurred on January 3, 2025.The victim, identified as Uromchi Okorocha, was accused by local youths of causing multiple deaths in the community through alleged spiritual activities. The suspects reportedly mobilized, captured Mr. Okorocha, and resorted to extrajudicial actions instead of handing him over to the authorities.Police operatives from the Uwanna Division, alongside tactical teams, were dispatched to the scene to rescue the victim. However, the mob had already killed and set him ablaze before their arrival.Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemned the act of jungle justice, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law. “The suspects took the law into their own hands, acting as judge, jury, and executioner. Such acts undermine the rule of law and will not be tolerated,” he stated. He urged citizens to report suspected crimes to law enforcement rather than resorting to violence. “The Nigeria Police Force is unwavering in its commitment to public safety and justice for all. We encourage citizens to collaborate with security agencies and provide actionable information to create a safe society for everyone.”The arrested suspects remain in custody and will face prosecution as the police reaffirm their dedication to addressing violent crimes and ensuring justice.
