Aseyin advises corps members to study traditions of communities

The Aseyin of Iseyin land, HRM Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola-Adeyeri III has advised the 2024 Batch B stream one Corps members deployed to Oyo State and currently undergoing Orientation exercise to study with keen interest the traditions and customs of any community they find themselves. He gave the advice while delivering his traditional lecture titled" Origin, Culture, Tradition Of The Yorubas" for the 2024 Batch B stream one Corps members held at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin. The first class Oba who was represented by Prince(Alh.)Semiu Adewole Azeez told the Corps members that the Yoruba people and descendants are black people who occupy the south-western area of Nigeria and can be traced to their ancient father, Oduduwa, the first settler and founder of Ile-Ife, the ancestral home of the Yorubas.  Oba Adeyeri III who observed that promotion of cultural heritage of a people is a precursor to national integration and development, cited the examples of several prominent Nigerians whose cross-cultural marriages were made possible because of their mobilisation for National Service among peoples and cultures different from theirs. He noted that such cross-cultural marriages brought a lot of commoness among various tribes in the country, thus encouraging unity which is important for development in all spheres of life which is the cardinal objective of the  NYSC Scheme. While underlining the rich culture and the traditions of the Yoruba people, the Royal father enjoined the Corps members to be aware and adhere to the culture, norms, values, taboos and laws prevalent in the communities of their Places of Primary Assignment. This he said will afford them the opportunity of a safe and fruitful co-habitation and memorable service year.He also highlighted the prime place of religion, greetings, dressing, food and values that the Yoruba people hold dearly. He stated that the Yoruba people are averse to indecent dressing and that they value their traditional clothes like iro, buba, ipele, and gele for the women and agbada, sokoto, buba, dansiki and fila for the men.He equally discussed how the Yoruba culture holds dear its traditional religion and taboos and enjoined Corps members to respect the sacredness of the belief of their host communities. The Oba also harped on the importance of greetings and respect marked by kneeling and prostrating by women and men respectively while greeting the elders.Speaking further, Oba Adeyeri III explained some interesting facts about the Yorubas and charged the corps members to be well behaved and law abiding citizens in their various host communities noting the accomodating, hospitable and welcoming nature of the tribe. He therefore prayed that their service year be monumental, historic and fruitful. Earlier the State Coordinator, Mr Odoba Abel Oche while welcoming the first Class Oba appreciated him for making out time to familiarise the Corps members with the history, culture and traditions of the Yorubas. Odoba who expressed that our culture is our future, hinted the Corps members that the lecture became necessary and timely for them to learn and gain knowledge about the people of their State of deployment. He observed that Oyo State is a land of peace and tranquility and the people are very hospitable. The highlight of the event was the presentation of cultural dances representing the three major tribes, Yoruba, Hausa,Igbo and presentation of gifts to His Royal Majesty.
