Nigerian Navy Rescues 59 from Distressed Vessel, Mourns Fallen Officer

The Nigerian Navy has announced the successful rescue of 59 crew members from a distressed vessel, the MV AMBIKA 4, amid turbulent conditions near the Okpobo River entrance. The operation, according to a press release issued by the Director of Information of the Nigerian Navy, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu however, was marked by tragedy as Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer leading the mission, lost his life during the rescue. He said the incident began on July 24, 2024, when the Navy received a distress call from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited. The vessel, operating in the Okpobo field, was reported to be at risk of sinking in an area notorious for its treacherous waters, especially at this time of year.In response, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY swiftly deployed a rescue team of 10 armed personnel in two interloper boats. The team, led by Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, faced significant challenges as they attempted to approach the distressed vessel due to the ferocity of the waves.Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Navy dispatched an additional squadron of three boats to reinforce the initial rescue team. The operation was further bolstered by the deployment of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter. After nearly 10 hours of relentless effort, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued. However, the mission took a tragic turn when Lieutenant Commander Gwaza accidentally fell overboard and lost his life in the line of duty. The incident occurred during the early hours of July 30, 2024, following a grueling overnight operation. The Nigerian Navy has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gwaza, describing him as a highly trained combat diver who exemplified courage and dedication. His death underscores the immense risks that Navy personnel face in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain. The statement from Commodore Adams-Aliu read; The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who bravely risked his life to save others, His dedication and sacrifice will forever be remembered.Lieutenant Commander Gwaza’s heroism and ultimate sacrifice have left a lasting impact on the Navy and the nation, highlighting the dangers that come with the duty of protecting Nigeria’s waters.www.twitter.com/spyetv
