*THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE CONGRESS OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ), ONDO STATE COUNCIL, HELD ON THURSDAY 29TH AUGUST, 2024 AT THE PRESS CENTRE, PEN CRESCENT, ALAGBAKA-AKURE*_The Congress which was presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite and well attended by members of the union across all chapels, deliberated on a wide range of issues from media industry, politics, to economy, security, and welfare of members among others and resolved as follows;_1. That the Congress was notified that Ondo NUJ leadership has concluded arrangements to set up the 2024 Press Week Committee to organize another memorable weeklong ceremonies. 2. That the Congress laments unnecessary delay in the implementation of the newly approved N70,000 Minimum Wage by Government, tasking key stakeholders to ensure immediate payment of the new wage to alleviate severe economic hardships currently faced by public servants.3. That that Congress charges INEC and other stakeholders to redouble their efforts in engaging the Media on Voter Enlightenment and Mobilisation ahead the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election in Ondo state and urges various political actors to sustain the current decorum in their campaigns that just kicked off for a peaceful election.4. That the Congress noted that the present economic situation occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy was becoming unbearable to the masses that led to a recent hunger protest and called on government to as a matter of urgency resolve all impediments hindering local production and supply of petroleum products to force down high cost of living.5. That the Congress calls on government to make deliberate investments in the agricultural sector through the provision of Tractors and other essential farm inputs at subsidized rates for farmers, to encourage mass food production in the face of soaring costs of food items.6. That the Congress appeals to Traditional Rulers in Ondo State to engage traders, especially market women headship (Iya-Olojas) in their communities, on the need to regulate and stabilize the high costs of food items, while Government should perform its responsibility of curbing excesses of traders.7. That the Congress commends the Ondo State Government for its ongoing efforts at clearing waterways across the state, and calls for more concerted efforts especially in areas that had been identified as flash points for flooding in the state to prevent disasters._COMMUNIQUE DRAFTING COMMITTEE:_1.
