Military Springs into Action, Establishes Flood Relief Camps As CDS Directs OPHK Theater Commander to Support Victims

As the nation’s most efficient and well-resourced institution, the Nigerian military is best positioned to carry out relief work on the scale warranted by the recent disaster after the collapse of the Alou Dam in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State. The military has also established flood relief camps across the state. Millions of Maiduguri residents have been displaced and infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, farm land, and power lines, received extensive damage. They suffered immense losses and are without homes, food, water, and electricity.The Nigerian military has stepped in to help with rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the wake of the large-scale disaster. Not only is the magnitude of its rescue and relief operations immense, but also it swung into action swiftly.The military leadership has been visiting flood-ravaged areas to show its sympathy for the masses and understanding of their concerns and needs. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa directed the Theater Commander Operation Hadin Kai to offer all necessary assistance to victims. General Musa also assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will work closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant authorities to provide immediate relief and support to the affected communities.  He also expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the government and good people of Borno State over the devastating flood that have ravaged several communities and paralyzed economic activities in the state.Director Defence Information, Brig. General Tukur Gusa in his press statement said the CDS was saddened to learn of the loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of thousands of citizens as a result of the flood from Alo Dam. On behalf of the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria the Chief of Defence Staff wish to convey heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and to the government and people of Borno State at this difficult time.The Armed Forces of Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Borno State and will ensure all affected communities are evacuated to safety and, in addition, will give support on the ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The CDS remains committed to the efforts of both the Federal and Borno state governments to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by this tragic event.  The Chief of Defence Staff prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
