Towards meeting the new financial commitments of the state government, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has signed into law the supplementary budget for 2024.The supplementary budget of N96, 788, 100, 000 (Ninety-six billion, seven hundred and eighty-eight million, one hundred thousand naira), as approved by the State House of Assembly, was signed by the Governor at the Executive Council Chambers of the Governor’s Office on Tuesday. This brings the total budget for 2024 to a total of N492, 045, 100, 000 (Four hundred and ninety-two billion, forty-five million, one hundred thousand naira). This is made up of recurrent expenditure of N246, 727, 852, 786 and capital expenditure of N245, 317, 247, 214.The supplementary budget captures the payment of the new minimum wage of N73, 000 recently approved for workers by the Governor, as well as the salaries of newly recruited workers across various sectors. Governor Aiyedatiwa said the supplementary budget reflects the determination of his administration to cater for the welfare of workers and the overall development of the state. The Governor also signed into law the Bill providing for the expansion of the board of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), saying the new law will ensure inclusivity and better equitable representation from the mandate areas.Governor Aiyedatiwa also signed the Amendment of the Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission Law, thanking the leadership and members of the House of Assembly on their diligent efforts on the bills.Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, said commend the leadership style of the Governor and the various milestones he has achieved since assumption of office. Oladiji said: "These giant strides have not only transformed the State in all facets but have clearly demonstrated your vision, capacity, intellectual ability, zeal, passion, direction and a clear understanding of the enormous job ahead."I want to on behalf of my colleagues assure Mr. Governor of our continuous support and cooperation to ensure the success of this administration. The significant endorsement was announced during the Congress' special rally in support of the Governor in Akure, on Tuesday.Addressing the labour leaders gathered for the occasion, the State Chairman of TUC, Comrade Clement Fatuase, stressed the unanimous decision reached by both past and present leaders of the Congress’ 23 active affiliate unions. He said: “In a meeting held on Thursday, 31st October 2024, the activities of the present administration were critically analysed. Mr Governor was rated excellent, compelling the Congress to reciprocate the gesture for his dedication to workers’ welfare."Enumerating Governor Aiyedatiwa’s achievements, he noted the regular and prompt payment of salaries, the disbursement of the 2024 leave bonus, and the payment of ₦35,000 wage award, an initiative that places Ondo State among the leading states in the Southwest, alongside Lagos. Additionally, he highlighted the near-completion recruitment drive for teachers in primary and secondary schools across the state’s 18 local government areas, the appointment of permanent secretaries and Tutors-General and the recruitment of about 1000 health workers. Fatuase also praised the governor’s approval of a new minimum wage of ₦73,000 and the sponsorship of over 100 workers to the Southwest Labour Summit in Ibadan.While commending Governor Aiyedatiwa’s achievements, the TUC chairman, urged the full implementation of the housing scheme with affordable land allocations for civil servants and the need for dedicated land to support civil servants interested in agriculture.In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude to the Congress for maintaining a harmonious relationship with his administration and commended the union for recognising the strides his government has made in the few months since assuming office, emphasising that these achievements were driven by a commitment to the welfare of the people of the State.Addressing the issue of salary payments, Aiyedatiwa stated that the regular and timely disbursement of workers’ wages is not a favour but a fundamental right of the workers. The Governor pledged his administration’s continued support for training and capacity building to ensure that public servants deliver efficient and effective services. He expressed appreciation for the union’s unified call for continuity, assuring them of his unwavering commitment to prioritising workers’ welfare and addressing their needs comprehensively.
