In a bizarre turn of events in Lusaka, Zambia, a police officer under the influence of alcohol released 13 suspects from custody on New Year’s Eve, allowing them to celebrate the holiday. The officer, Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, was arrested after freeing the detainees, who faced charges such as assault, robbery, and burglary, and then fleeing the scene himself. The incident occurred at Leonard Cheelo police station, where Phiri allegedly took the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda in his intoxicated state. He then unlocked both male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, telling them they were free to ring in the new year. Out of the 15 individuals in custody, 13 escaped, and a manhunt is currently underway to locate them.Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the events, stating that Phiri’s actions led to his arrest, though he has yet to comment on the matter. The police are now working to apprehend the escaped suspects, who are now on the run.The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case from 1997, where former High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda ordered the release of 53 suspects, citing the prolonged delay in their court appearances.Zambia’s authorities are now facing questions over the conduct of their officers, as they work to address the fallout from this unusual breach of duty.
