OSOPADEC Begins Relief Distribution in Ilaje

The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has commenced the distribution of relief materials to residents of Obe-Nla, Obe-Adun, and Obe-Jedo in Ilaje Local Government Area, marking a major step in the recovery process following the October 2025 crisis that disrupted livelihoods in the affected communities. The flag-off ceremony, held at the Commission’s Area Office in Igbokoda on Friday, drew stakeholders from across the region. Speaking at the event, OSOPADEC Executive Chairman, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, described the initiative as a deliberate effort aimed at restoring hope and rebuilding lives. According to Poroye, the intervention was the outcome of extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, youth representatives, women groups, and security agencies, whose contributions helped shape a comprehensive response to the crisis. He disclosed that the relief programme, approved in January 2026 by Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, reflects the administration’s commitment to transforming mandate areas through a blend of immediate humanitarian assistance and long-term developmental strategies. Items distributed to beneficiaries include food supplies, clothing, mattresses, and other essential household materials designed to cushion the impact of the crisis on affected families. Poroye commended the governor for his dedication to community development and responsive governance. Beyond the immediate relief, the Commission has rolled out a broader recovery plan targeting economic revitalisation and infrastructure development. This includes the procurement of outboard engines such as Yamaha 40HP and 15HP units to support local fishermen, alongside the construction of new fishing boats to boost productivity. The housing sector is also receiving attention, with over 25 buildings earmarked for renovation, while severely damaged homes will be reconstructed. Construction materials have already been delivered to project sites, and contractors mobilised, with some projects expected to be completed within four weeks and others within six weeks. In addition, plans are underway for the construction of a modern bakery to replace the one destroyed during the crisis. The facility, which will be equipped with improved capacity and powered by newly procured generators, is expected to support local enterprise and create employment opportunities. Chairman of the Palliative Committee, Dr. Ola Judah, described the intervention as a well-structured and data-driven initiative aligned with global best practices in humanitarian response. He noted that the programme is built on four key pillars: data integrity, shelter and infrastructure, economic empowerment, and transparency. Judah explained that a verified database of beneficiaries was developed to ensure that assistance reaches the most vulnerable, eliminating duplication and inefficiencies. He added that the housing component includes the construction of 12 new buildings and the rehabilitation of 14 others to restore stability to displaced families. On economic empowerment, he revealed that 15 outboard engines and 13 fishing boats have already been distributed, alongside plans for the bakery project. He emphasized that these interventions are designed not as handouts, but as sustainable tools for self-reliance and long-term growth. He further assured that strong monitoring mechanisms, in collaboration with security agencies, have been established to ensure transparency and prevent the diversion of resources. Both Poroye and Judah stressed the importance of peace, unity, and cooperation among residents, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in a stable and harmonious environment. Reaffirming OSOPADEC’s long-term commitment, Poroye stated that while the distribution exercise marks the end of one phase, the Commission will continue to supervise ongoing projects and support affected communities until full recovery is achieved. “Your concerns have been heard,” he said. “Our objective is not just to restore what was lost, but to lay a stronger foundation for a more resilient future.” The intervention stands as one of the most comprehensive post-crisis responses in Ondo State’s oil-producing communities, combining immediate relief efforts with strategic investments aimed at promoting resilience, economic recovery, and sustainable development
