Defections: ‘ADC is dead’ - Akpabio says

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday declared that the African Democratic Congress may have lost relevance following a wave of defections by its members. Akpabio made the remark during plenary while reading a letter announcing the defection of the senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe, from the ADC to the Labour Party. The Senate President, reacting to the development, said the frequency of defections from the party suggested it was losing its footing in the political landscape. “I think ADC is dead,” Akpabio said, adding, “How many times are people defecting? Every month? Let us compile all the names so it does not appear like a daily routine.” He further directed that records of lawmakers switching parties should be properly documented to reflect their previous affiliations and new political platforms. The latest development follows recent high-profile defections involving former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who exited the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The spate of defections has intensified speculation about shifting alliances and political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
