SSS warns of possible terrorists' attack in Ondo communities

The State Security Service (SSS) has issued a warning to the Nigerian Army about an impending terrorist attack reportedly being planned by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Ondo State.The alert, contained in a memo dated October 20, 2025, and addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, indicated that intelligence reports had uncovered plans by ISWAP to carry out coordinated assaults in parts of Ondo and Kogi states.“Intelligence confirmed plans by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon,” said the SSS memo signed by Hi Kana, Ondo State Directorate of Security.The document identified Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area, along with Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as the targeted communities.The secret police urged the military authorities to heighten vigilance and tighten security around the identified locations, warning that the terrorists “have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations.”It added, “Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation.”This latest alert follows the deadly 2022 attack on a Catholic church in Owo, where more than 40 worshippers were killed by suspected ISWAP members.Security analysts have in recent times raised alarm over the gradual spread of terrorist networks into southern Nigeria, after years of violent operations in the North-East region.
