Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening conflict prevention mechanisms through a robust Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system, as the Federal Government continues efforts to address emerging peace and security challenges across the country and the African continent. The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, made this known in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, at an Engagement Session on “Strengthening and Capacity Building of the National Early Warning Response Group (EWRG)”. The event was held on Wednesday at the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) Conference Hall, Abuja. The Minister described the engagement session as a strategic initiative of the IPCR, organised in collaboration with the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) project of the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). He noted that the partnership reflects the strength of Nigeria’s bilateral relations with the United Kingdom and underscores a shared commitment to conflict prevention, resilience building and sustainable peace. According to him, the capacity-building session demonstrates the dedication of stakeholders in preventing conflict, enhancing security, promoting regional cooperation and advancing socio-economic development in Nigeria and across Africa. Ambassador Tuggar emphasised the importance of a comprehensive and data-driven EWER system in responding to contemporary peace and security challenges, including political instability, banditry, terrorism, violent extremism and transnational organised crime. He identified climate change and the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) as major drivers of insecurity, particularly in the Sahel and other parts of Africa. He stated that Nigeria has continued to evolve strategic pathways to confront these challenges in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 4-D Foreign Policy Doctrine, which prioritises development, diaspora, demography and democracy. He added that Nigeria’s proactive role in addressing political crises across the continent reflects its commitment to regional stability and global peace. The Minister noted that the engagement session further highlights Nigeria’s resolve to strengthen its National Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System, improve collaboration among stakeholders and enhance early warning reporting and response mechanisms across the peace and security ecosystem. He expressed confidence that the objectives of the session would be achieved through the collective contributions of stakeholders drawn from across the peace and security spectrum, describing the engagement as a key platform for experience sharing and long-term networking under the National Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (NCEWERS) of the IPCR. Ambassador Tuggar said the initiative would contribute to the prevention of violent conflicts, promotion of unity and peaceful coexistence, enhancement of justice and inclusivity, improved food security and sustained economic growth. He noted that these goals align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration. He concluded by commending the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Team Lead of SPRiNG under the FCDO for the successful organisation of the capacity-building engagement session.www.twitter.com/spyetv
