Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have taken steps to further strengthen their defence and security cooperation, as both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deeper engagement in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. The move was disclosed by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, AFM, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, 17 December 2025. In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the EU Ambassador congratulated General Oluyede on his appointment and reiterated the EU’s readiness to support Nigeria in overcoming its security challenges. He emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance to the European Union, noting that 19 out of the EU’s 27 member states currently maintain diplomatic representation in the country. Ambassador Mignot highlighted several ongoing EU-supported non-kinetic projects across Nigeria, aimed at promoting peacebuilding and stability. He stressed that the EU’s support for Nigeria extends beyond military assistance to include broader areas such as governance and politics, particularly at a time of complex security and socio-political challenges. Responding, the CDS expressed appreciation for the EU’s sustained support to Nigeria, noting that he was fully aware of the scope and impact of EU interventions. He welcomed the EU’s plan to engage Nigeria more directly on security matters, beyond the existing focus on providing military support primarily to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). General Oluyede called for the fast-tracking of proposed defence engagements, stressing that Nigeria is currently grappling with multifaceted security threats and would greatly benefit from enhanced EU support in addressing these challenges. The meeting underscored the shared resolve of Nigeria and the European Union to deepen defence cooperation as part of broader efforts to promote peace, stability and security.www.twitter.com/spyetv
