Gunmen kill 31 villagers in fresh Niger border attack

No fewer than 31 civilians have been killed in an attack on a village in western Niger, close to the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali, local sources said on Tuesday.The assault reportedly occurred on Sunday in Bosiye village, located in the Tillaberi region, a volatile area where the frontiers of the three Sahel countries meet.Residents said the attackers, who arrived in the community in large numbers, opened fire on villagers, leaving scores dead and several others injured.A community source told AFP that 30 people died instantly, while one of the injured victims later died at a health facility, bringing the death toll to 31.The attack was also confirmed by a local student union, which described the incident as shocking and condemned what it called a “barbaric act” against innocent civilians.Tillaberi has remained a major hotspot for violence, with armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State carrying out repeated assaults in the area for years.According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, Tillaberi emerged as the deadliest region in the central Sahel in 2025, underscoring the worsening security crisis in the zone.
