When distinguished graduates of the University of Ibadan assemble, the atmosphere is often thick with memories of excellence and national impact. That spirit was evident on Friday, February 27, 2026, as the Ondo State Branch of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA) conferred its Distinguished Alumni Award on Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Achievers University. The honour was presented during the 2026 Basorun Seinde Arogbofa (OFR, MDA)/Ondo UIAA Alumni Lecture and Awards ceremony held at the Prof. T. I. Francis Auditorium of Federal University of Technology, Akure. In addition to receiving the award, Prof. Ayorinde chaired the occasion, reflecting the deep respect he commands within his alma mater and the broader academic community. A proud alumnus of University of Ibadan, Prof. Ayorinde is a legal scholar and accomplished academic administrator with decades of experience spanning academia, public service, and institutional governance. His career trajectory has consistently reflected a commitment to scholarship, leadership, and nation-building. Over the years, he has established and supported educational institutions at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, creating structured opportunities for learning and advancement. His interventions have been driven by a belief that education remains the most reliable pathway to social mobility and sustainable development. As Founder of Achievers University, Owo, Prof. Ayorinde has championed policies aimed at widening access to quality higher education. Through scholarship schemes and student support initiatives, the institution has enabled young Nigerians from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to pursue university education, reinforcing the principle that financial limitations should not obstruct academic ambition. Beyond expanding access, his institutions have contributed meaningfully to human capital development and employment generation. By providing jobs for academic and non-academic staff while nurturing thousands of students, his leadership has strengthened local economies and advanced community development. His governance philosophy emphasizes quality assurance, ethical standards, and long-term sustainability. Speaking at the event, Seinde Arogbofa (OFR, MDA), whose legacy anchors the annual lecture series, reflected on the historic role of the University of Ibadan as Nigeria’s premier university. He described Ondo State as “a fertile womb” that has produced generations of alumni who have excelled in governance, finance, the military, academia, and other strategic sectors. He further noted that the strength of the UI alumni network lies not merely in its size, but in its active engagement with national issues and its readiness to offer leadership and solutions. According to him, the enduring relevance of the UIAA lecture series is rooted in its commitment to fostering dialogue and policy-oriented discourse. The ceremony featured two keynote presentations. Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, delivered a lecture on the “Blue Economy,” outlining prospects for sustainable national growth through the responsible development of marine and coastal resources. In a separate address titled “Breaking the Chains: Strengthening Institutions for Transparency and Progress,” Most Rev. Williams Olu Aladekugbe, Archbishop of Ibadan Province of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, emphasized accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership as foundations for national advancement. Dignitaries at the event included Rt. Hon. Bakkita Bello, former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly and the Olukoju of Odooko-Afa, Oke-Agbe Akoko; the Vice-Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji; and the global president of the UIAA, Surv. Thomas Dabiri, fnis. The UIAA Distinguished Alumni Award remains one of the association’s highest recognitions, reserved for graduates whose lives embody excellence, service, and enduring societal impact. For Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, the honour reaffirms his lifelong dedication to education as a vehicle for empowerment and nation-building, while strengthening the historic bond between the University of Ibadan and its alumni in shaping Nigeria’s development trajectory.
