The Federal High Court in Abuja has handed a life sentence to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, after finding him guilty on terrorism-related charges.Justice James Omotosho delivered the ruling on Thursday, marking four years since Kanu was brought back to the country from Kenya under disputed circumstances to face a seven-count indictment. The sentencing was delivered without Kanu present in the courtroom, as he had insisted that the court would not proceed with the judgment. His refusal led to a brief confrontation, prompting the judge to order security operatives to remove him for what was described as unruly conduct. In the judgment, Justice Omotosho held that some of Kanu’s broadcasts on Radio Biafra fell within the scope of terrorism, saying they promoted violent intentions and outcomes. The court also found that the sit-at-home directives issued by Kanu in the South-East amounted to acts of terror, noting that the orders infringed on the rights and movement of residents in the region.Relying on evidence presented during the trial, the judge ruled that Kanu used his platform to encourage attacks on security personnel, describing his actions as preparatory steps toward terrorism.Kanu was ultimately convicted on all seven counts filed against him, despite earlier entering a plea of not guilty.
