A 14-year-old Junior Secondary School student has delivered a baby girl at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, after being impregnated by her biological father, 43-year-old Kayode Oluwaseyifunmi, a bricklayer and self-acclaimed evangelist. The case came into the open through Radio Nigeria after the girl, who had been living with her father and two younger sisters since their mother’s death seven years ago, suddenly disappeared from school in Oluyole Local Government Area. The teenager was later rescued to an orphanage, where she went into premature labour. She was first rushed to Molete Health Centre, then referred to Adeoyo Hospital, Yemetu, and later Ring Road State Hospital, but was rejected at all three facilities due to complications. She was eventually admitted at UCH where doctors performed a Caesarean operation. Both mother and newborn were placed on oxygen as the pregnancy was not full term and the girl was too weak to withstand the stress of childbirth.Radio Nigeria contacted the relatives of Mr. Oluwaseyifunmi and his late wife, but none could provide financial assistance.Another challenge was the lack of any family member to stay with the teenage mother and her baby in the Intensive Care Unit. After much pleading, a caregiver was hired by both families for just six days at the cost of ₦21,000.The girl, described as dark and chubby, said she had to abandon her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) because of shame. She also confessed that she had been having sexual relations with her father for about two years before the pregnancy.Following the report to the Ministry of Women Affairs, the suspect was arrested and remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre, Ibadan. When interrogated, Mr. Oluwaseyifunmi blamed his actions on the devil, claiming he did not know what came over him.The shocking incident has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator and stronger child protection laws to prevent such abuse within families.
