Two whales have died and one has been euthanised after a pod re-stranded in Golden Bay overnight.

One of a group of 11 whales stranded in Golden Bay has died, but the remaining 10 have been re-floated, according to the Department of Conservation.

Volunteers helped guide the pod of 10 over sandbars until they were no longer visible.

One of two pods of pilot whales stranded over the weekend remain on Puponga Beach near Pakawau, as rescuers await high tide at 3:30pm today.

Volunteers will be checking Golden Bay beaches on Thursday hoping a pod of pilot whales has stayed out at sea.

Project Jonah had called for help in a post on Facebook to keep the whales "cool and calm" until high tide.
