Legendary British actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter, passed away at age 88, her family announced.

The actor, whose career dates form the 1950s, starred in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey

Her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens confirmed Smith died in hospital on Friday.
