HDR10+ Content on Netflix Now Uses AV1 Codec
AV1 is a video codec that compresses video content 30% better than the VP9 codec. It is also a codec to save mobile data usage. Netflix has been using this codec on their platform for Android devices, televisions and consoles but is limited to select content. Recently, HDR10+ content has been announced to start playing with the AV1 codec.According to Netflix, any device that supports the AV1 codec will automatically play content on this codec. The difference is, this codec was previously limited to HDR10 content only and has now been expanded to HDR10+ content as well.There are 11,000 hours of HDR10+ content on Netflix and over 50% is now played on the AV1 codec. All new content and existing popular content have also used this codec. By the end of 2025, all HDR content on Netflix will be available using AV1.To enjoy HDR10+ content without using a lot of data, the AV1 codec on Netflix is only supported on the Netflix Premium plan. You need the most expensive plan which is RM62.90 per month.
