Indonesia Says Apple's $1 Billion Investment Still Not Enough

As the world's fourth-largest population country, Indonesia is also an important market for smartphone manufacturers. Until now, the iPhone 16 series has not been allowed to be sold in Indonesia because Apple does not meet the requirement for 40% of the device's components to be manufactured by local companies. After several times Apple's investment proposals were rejected, they were then reported to want to offer a $1 billion investment in Indonesia at the end of last year.According to a Reuters report, Nick Ammann, Apple's vice president of global government relations, met with Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Indonesia's industry minister, yesterday. In the meeting, both parties set targets for the content of the investment agreement but have not set any timeframe for its implementation.Agus did not share what Apple had promised but said that even if it was an investment of $1 billion, it would still not be enough for Indonesia. This may be an early sign that Indonesia wants larger investments on par with neighboring Vietnam and Malaysia, which have Apple production plants.
