Transplanting animal organs into humans was considered an impossible procedure just a decade ago. But researchers from NYU Langone Health announced that Towana Looney (53) now holds the record for the longest-lived person after receiving a pig kidney transplant.Looney, who hails from Alabama, USA, received the modified pig kidney on November 25, 2024. On January 25, she had lived with the pig kidney for more than 61 days, which was the previous record. She was ineligible to receive a human kidney because she had high levels of antibodies in her body, which made it more likely that the organ would be rejected. This is unfortunate because Looney donated a kidney to her mother in 1999. Since 2016, she has needed a hemodialysis machine to survive after her kidneys were damaged by high blood pressure. In addition to the pig kidney transplant, NYU Langone Health has also successfully transplanted a pig heart into a brain-dead human for 72 hours in 2022 and a full eye transplant in 2023.Researchers say Looney showed no adverse reactions and the organ functioned normally after the surgery. This opens up the possibility of xenotransplantation procedures using pig organs instead of human organs as a solution to the world's organ shortage.
