All internet service providers (ISPs) in Malaysia will be required to perform DNS redirection for businesses, enterprises and governments starting September 30. This instruction was found by The Star on the Maxis FAQ page which will cause all traffic using public DNS such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to be redirected to the ISP's DNS. With this, the technique of using DNS to bypass obstacles to certain websites can no longer be used. This indirectly allows the government to completely block traffic to certain sites. Maxis said MCMC will closely monitor and enforce the implementation of DNS redirection to ensure that all Internet service providers comply with MCMC rules and directives. Only public DNS will be affected by this issued command. Self-hosted private DNS or with DNS over HTTPS (DoH) on web browsers will be allowed to operate as normal.Blocked sites in Malaysia are those involved in gambling, pornography, piracy, online fraud and various other crimes. However, as we reported today, ArtStation's online portfolio site has been blocked in Malaysia without any reason being given.
