AMD Will Produce Chips For Sony PlayStation 6

Sony's next console PlayStation 6 (PS6) will reportedly use chips manufactured by AMD. According to a Reuters report, AMD beat out bids by Intel and Broadcom for the same contract. Among the reasons AMD was chosen was to ensure that the PS5 could run the PS4 and PS5 game catalog.Continuing to support older games is necessary because Sony doesn't want to repeat the PS3's mistake of using NVIDIA-based Cell chips that made these console games unplayable on later consoles. The contract is believed to be awarded to AMD in 2022.Even if AMD wins this bid, the PS6 is only expected to launch four years from now due to the 8-year cycle for each console generation. The PS5 Pro that was just announced two weeks ago will go on sale starting next November.The failure to win the Sony contract is believed to be one of the factors why Intel suffered such losses that it had to cut thousands of workers and now separate the foundry business from the parent company.
