SKMM (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) has now announced the implementation of a public consultation involving a full transition to the use of IPv6 digital addresses by 2028. The MCMC is conducting a public consultation on this goal starting today, October 2, 2024 until October 31, 2024.This transition plan from the use of IPv4 addresses to IPv6 is not something new. This transition is necessary to allow the internet and digital infrastructure in Malaysia to continue to grow with the addition of limited IP addresses from IPv4 technology (from around 4.3 billion addresses) to IPv6 which offers a much larger number of IP addresses (3.4 x 1038 IP addresses). This is especially important when the country is moving towards the development of a more robust internet infrastructure, whether for ordinary users or for the use of various industries in the country. In a statement issued by SKMM, they expect the full transition process from using IPv4 to IPv6 to begin in 2025, and is expected to be completed around 2028. For this, the MCMC has also prepared a paper on how the transition process from IPv4 to IPv6 will be done. For now, throughout the public consultation process, the MCMC has invited those in the IT industry, whether company spokespersons, network administrators or the public, to give their views on this matter without shame.
