MCMC: Telegram and WeChat Begin Social Media Licensing Process

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today shared that Telegram and Tencent (WeChat) have begun the licensing process required to remain operating in Malaysia.Previously, the government had set the effective date for licensing for social media and messaging applications with more than 8 million users, effective January 1, 2025. This licensing measure is in an effort to increase the responsibility of social media and messaging companies in protecting users, improving online security, as well as creating a harmonious and trusted environment. In parallel with the announcement regarding these two companies, MCMC also reminded all other service providers to meet the licensing requirements by submitting applications before December 31, 2024. MCMC said failure to do so could result in regulatory action being taken although it is something that all parties want to avoid.
