One of the US authorities, the FBI has now confirmed that they buy data and information involving user locations from third parties and related data providers. The data is seen to be used for surveillance purposes, thus violating the privacy of users.Previously, in the United States, if the authorities want to obtain location data, they need a specific warrant for it. The warrant is then referred to the telecommunications provider, and obtain the related data. However, by purchasing location data commercially from location data providers, no warrant is seen to be required.At present, it is not known how extensive the location data is collected by the FBI, and what form of surveillance they use it for. Previously, American authorities have also asked artificial intelligence service providers to offer access for surveillance purposes. Anthropic withdrew from the offer, but other providers such as OpenAI are seen to continue to cooperate with authorities in the United States.It is not known to what extent the data is used by the FBI or other enforcement agencies in the United States for surveillance and others. Previously, several application providers and developers were found to be selling a large amount of collected data to related agents to generate additional revenue.
