GlobalFoundries Acquires Singapore-Based Photonic Chipmaker

GlobalFoundries recently announced that it has acquired Singapore-based Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), a company focused on manufacturing photonic silicon chips, a technology that helps in the fast transmission of data using light.This technology is seen to further accelerate the development of artificial intelligence and data center technologies for both traditional computing and quantum computing. In fact, it is reported that NVIDIA and TSMC have already begun a collaboration to use this photonic technology to assemble their network chips with these optical chips.With this acquisition, GlobalFoundries can now be seen as one of the largest photonic semiconductor chipmakers in the world. They are seen to have helped a number of other companies to build supercomputers and powerful quantum computers that take advantage of this photonic networking technology, such as PsiQuantum which is building its own quantum computer in Chicago, USA.According to reports, GlobalFoundries will also open a photonics technology research center in Singapore and will collaborate with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to research and develop technology that allows data to be transmitted at a rate of 400Gbps.
