'Mystery' surrounding firing of key DOJ lawyer stumps legal expert

The abrupt firing this week of a top Justice Department lawyer who prosecuted the Jeffrey Epstein case amid denials about the "files" by the DOJ and the Trump administration caught the attention of a legal expert. That prosecutor, Maurene Comey, secured the only conviction of Epstein in a Florida-specific case. She was at work to bring those charges to federal courts, given that the alleged activity took place over several states and jurisdictions. "And that is a mystery to me," confessed MSNBC's legal analyst Lisa Rubin, speaking to host Chris Jansing. Rubin noted that if they're trying to use Comey as a scapegoat to dodge releasing the files, she "is not the right person.""In fact, if you are interested in figuring out who the steadfast advocates for victims are here and we should all be focused on victims of child sex abuse, Maurene Comey has done quite a bit to advance the cause of justice for people, adults, and children alike, who are victims of child sex abuse," Rubin noted. Comey was also involved in the prosecution of Epstein's girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell. She also aided in the successful prosecution of Robert Hadden, the Columbia University gynecologist who was indicted for sexually abusing over 245 patients. "That's not a person who isn't putting victims' interests first," said Rubin about Comey. "She's not the right person to blame here. And if that's the reason for her firing, and again, the letter given to her cites no reason other than Article II of the Constitution — that's a really misguided political distraction, not a warranted disciplinary action."As the legal panel continued the discussion about the investigatory information around the Epstein probe, the analysts noted that there are at least a million pages of information in the Epstein files. Trump's allies have demanded that all of them be released. See the clip below or at the link here. - YouTube www.youtube.com
