Chincoteague Pony Swim turns 100 this week

Every summer, tens of thousands flock to the shores of Chincoteague Island to see the wild ponies swimming across the Assateague Channel. “Everybody needs to see it at least once,” said Denise Bowden, mayor of Chincoteague. What started as a humble fundraiser is now a century-old spectacle. The Chincoteague Pony Swim marks its 100th anniversary this week, and the ponies are ready to make history. “They’re all special,” Bowden said. “We’ve never had this many foals born in one year, and recently we had the 100th born.
