Invasive species like the blue catfish have been wreaking havoc on Maryland water ecosystems for years — but on Friday, the Maryland Sports Commission, Department of Agriculture and national competitive eating organization Major League Eating debuted what they hope will be an annual effort to ameliorate the issue. The inaugural Battle of the Bay: Wild Caught Blue Catfish Chowdown brought 11 competitors from around the world to the Maryland State Fair in Timonium, where they gobbled up fried blue catfish strips at top speed for a purse of $5,000.
