'Big news!' Trump celebrates Supreme Court's shock Jan. 6 ruling

Donald Trump hailed a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that could have major implications for one his own criminal cases Friday. The court ruled 6-3 in favor of former police officer Joseph Fischer, who was among hundreds of Jan. 6 defendants — including the former president — who have been charged with obstructing an official proceeding for their effort to prevent the congressional certification of President Joe Biden's election win."Big news!" Trump posted on Truth Social, accompanied by a screenshot of a post by conservative influencer Julie Kelly announcing the hotly anticipated decision."In a massive victory for J6 political prisoners and an unprecedented defeat for the corrupt Biden/Garland/Monaco/Graves DOJ, SCOTUS has overturned the DOJ's use of 1512(c)(2), obstruction of an official proceeding, in J6 cases," Kelly posted. "This means the Department of Justice has unlawfully prosecuted 350+ Americans for their participation in January 6 – a flagrant abuse of the law to punish those who protested Biden's election and to criminalize political dissent."ALSO READ: Rep. Byron Donalds, his gigantic Jim Crow myth and a forgotten fact about Black votersThe court decided the law enacted in response to the Enron accounting scandal was intended to apply only in limited circumstances that involved tampering with physical evidence.Nearly 80 percent of the 1,400 defendants charged in the U.S. Capitol riot were not charged with obstructing an official proceeding, but were instead charged with trespassing federal property and assaulting or resisting a law enforcement officer.Prosecutors charged only those individuals accused of knowingly and intentionally attempting to stop Congress from certifying the election and transferring power away from Trump, who has been indicted on four charges, including one count of obstructing an official proceeding and another of conspiracy to do so, related to the insurrection. The Supreme Court still has not issued its decision on Trump's immunity claim in the Jan. 6 case.
