KFOR warns against opening the main bridge over the Ibër River in Mitrovica

The NATO-led peacekeeping forces in Kosovo said on Tuesday that any decision on the opening of the main bridge over the Iber River in Mitrovica should be made within the framework of talks facilitated by the European Union, while warning that it will deal with any development that affects regional security and stability. The peacekeeping forces said that on Tuesday morning the KFOR commander Özkan Ulutaş was notified by the director of the Kosovo Police for an upcoming technical inspection on the main bridge over the Ibër river, which marks the dividing line between the two municipalities of Mitrovica, the northern one inhabited by a Serbian majority and the south inhabited by an Albanian majority. “KFOR units maintain a permanent presence on the bridge and continue to carry out regular patrols in the surrounding areas to ensure stability and security for the benefit of all local communities. We will not hesitate to address any development that may affect the secure environment and regional stability, in accordance with the mandate set by the United Nations.“, says a communiqué of the peacekeeping forces.
