US Likely to Propose Ban on Chinese Software in Self-Driving Vehicles

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to propose a ban on Chinese-made software in autonomous and connected vehicles in the coming weeks, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The Biden administration plans to propose a rule that would ban Chinese software from U.S. vehicles with Level 3 and higher automation, which would also result in a ban on testing autonomous vehicles made by some Chinese companies on American roads. The source added that the administration, in a previously unreported decision, also plans to propose banning vehicles equipped with advanced Chinese wireless communications modules from American roads. Under the proposal, automakers and suppliers would have to verify that none of their connected vehicles, or advanced autonomous vehicle software, were developed in a “foreign entity of concern” such as China, the source said. The U.S. Commerce Department said last month it planned to release the proposal in August and is expected to impose restrictions on a range of software made in China and other countries it deems adversaries.
