Death Toll Rises in Eastern Congo Attacks

The death toll in two attacks in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to at least 18, with 14 others missing, local sources told the news agency. AFPSunday (11/8). The attack, which took place on Saturday (10/8) in the Beni region of the troubled North Kivu province, was allegedly carried out by the ISIS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group. The death toll “has been revised from 10 to 18,” Kinos Katuo, a civil society leader in the area where the attack took place, told AFP. He added that 14 people were missing, and four houses and two motorbikes were also burned. Another local leader, Charles Endukado, told AFP that the number of people killed in the attack was “more than 18.” “No one can go to pick up the bodies that are still lying on the ground,” he said. The ADF, originally a largely Muslim rebel group in Uganda, has been present for the past three decades in eastern Congo, killing thousands of civilians.
