Turkish Air Strike Kills 17 Kurdish Militants in northern Iraq

The Turkish military carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq and “neutralized” 17 members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the Turkish Defense Ministry said on Monday (12/8). Turkey, which typically uses the term “neutralize” to refer to killing, has carried out a cross-border operation called Claw-Lock in Iraq as part of its offensive against the PKK militant group. The PKK, which has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Türkiye has also launched a military offensive in Syria against the Kurdish YPG militia, which it largely views as a wing of the PKK. (ab/lt)
