Biden Announces $150 Million in Research Funding to Fight Cancer

US President Joe Biden visited Louisiana’s famed “Cancer Alley” on Tuesday to pursue what he called a top priority of his waning presidency. He announced $150 million in research funding to achieve the goal of dramatically reducing cancer deaths in the United States. The Cancer Moonshot is an initiative close to Biden’s heart. He and First Lady Jill Biden both had skin cancer. And in 2015, an aggressive brain cancer took the life of their eldest son, Beau. “We’re moving fast,” Biden said of the initiative, which aims to cut cancer deaths in the U.S. by at least half by 2047. “Because we know that every family affected by cancer is in a race against time.” Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. The National Cancer Institute estimates that 2 million Americans will be diagnosed with the disease this year, which can manifest in organs, bone marrow and blood, and has hundreds of different types. “Cancer touches us all,” the first lady said. “When Joe and I lost our son to brain cancer, we decided to turn our pain into purpose.
