Thailand's Constitutional Court to Decide Prime Minister's Fate Soon

Thailand's Constitutional Court will decide on Wednesday (Aug. 14) the fate of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, in a decision that could see him sacked after less than a year in office and plunge the country into deeper political uncertainty. Srettha, a property tycoon with no political background, has been the subject of complaints from former senators appointed by the previous military government, who say he violated the constitution when he gave a cabinet post to a jailed former lawyer. If Srettha is removed, the 500-seat parliament would have to meet to elect a new prime minister, potentially leading to more unrest in a country that has been plagued by two decades of coups and court rulings that have brought down governments and political parties. The same court last week dissolved the Forward Moving Party (MFP), a hugely popular opposition party that campaigned on promises to reform a law against insulting the monarchy. The party's members regrouped on Friday to form a new party.
