Former Vice Chairman of Chinese Football Association Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Bribery

The former vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 1 million yuan (US$139,579) for accepting bribes, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Monday (Aug. 19) citing a court ruling. Li Yuyi's sentence follows an investigation into more than a dozen top football officials since late 2022. The sport has long struggled with corruption, with Chinese fans blaming it for the poor performance of their national team. In 2012, two former heads of the same football association were sentenced to 10.5 years in prison each for accepting bribes. In March, a former chairman of China's football association was sentenced to life in prison for taking more than $10 million in bribes, in one of the biggest anti-corruption probes in Chinese sports in years.
