Prison Break Occurs Again in Haiti, Several Inmates Escape

Officials say inmates at a prison in the central coastal city of Saint-Marc escaped on Friday (Aug. 16). Koran Miami Herald reported that businesspeople in the city, located north of the capital Port-au-Prince, had been asking for police assistance for several days, citing increasing gang violence problems. The New Lista local newspaper, reported that when the prison break occurred, the guards went on strike to demand better working conditions. The newspaper said that the government commissioner, Vension Francois, was worried that the prison guards might rebel, but did not provide further details. Police in Saint-Marc issued a notice informing the public of the prison break. The notice also asked the public to report any suspicious persons who may be escaped prisoners. Unverified videos of the prison break posted to social media showed people climbing over walls amid fire, smoke and loud explosions. It was not immediately clear how many prisoners escaped. It was also not known whether the escapes were caused by gang raids, a lack of internal security or other reasons, officials said.
