Studying babies' movements can warn of autism

Some types of diagnoses, such as for autism, can be spotted earlier by studying how babies move, say scientists at the University of Sussex in Britain. They are experimenting with motion-tracking technology and artificial intelligence to analyze babies' movements. This technology was recently presented during a science fair in Britain. Scientists are trying to mimic the rapid movements of a baby. Their experiment aims to demonstrate how complex babies' movements are. The camera tracks and records their efforts as they try to imitate the rapid hand and foot movements shown to them on a screen. This technology uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to compare babies' movements with their social and communication skills during the first 18 years of their lives. The study aims to analyze the movements of babies through film footage and motion sensors. “The objective of the experiment is to understand how babies move, to study their movements when they are very small and to see if this can signal autism, for example, in the future. Computer technology learns from images and footage, determines the positions of limbs at different times and examines how they move,” explains Ivor Simpson, professor at the University of Sussex. Scientists still …
