Will Japan's approach to the region change under the new leader?

Japan will soon have a new leader as Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced last week that he will not seek re-election in September's elections to lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. As VOA's Tokyo correspondent Henry Ridgewell reports, Prime Minister Kishida sought to increase Japan's security capabilities amid growing regional threats. But will the next prime minister continue these efforts? Outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida marked the 79th anniversary of his country's defeat in World War II on August 15. Mr Kishida said Japan must “never repeat the devastation of war” again. His speech also reflected Japan's changing role on the world stage. “Japan will do everything to solve the various challenges facing the world.” Mr. Kishida sought to transform Japan's defense posture. He warned that what is happening in Ukraine today could happen in Asia tomorrow. The Japanese leader has established close ties with Kiev, visiting it in 2023 before hosting President Zelenskyy in Hiroshima at the G7 meeting. Mr Kishida's program aims to double defense spending by 2027, develop close regional alliances and improve US military command in Japan.
