US High Commissioner Meets Dalai Lama in New York

Top U.S. officials met with the Dalai Lama in New York on Wednesday, the State Department said, in a rare high-level face-to-face meeting between Washington and the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. The Dalai Lama, who is denounced by Beijing as a separatist, met with senior State Department official Uzra Zeya and White House National Security Council official Kelly Razzouk in New York, where he is visiting for medical treatment. During the meeting, Zeya “reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to advancing the human rights of Tibetans and supporting efforts to preserve their distinct historical, linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage.” Beijing maintains tight control over Tibet, which it views as an inseparable part of its territory, and denounces the Dalai Lama, who advocates greater autonomy for Tibet, as a rebel. During Wednesday's meeting, Zeya also discussed US support for continuing dialogue between the PRC and the Dalai Lama and his representatives,” the statement said, using the acronym for the People's Republic of China. Talks between Beijing and Tibetan leaders have been stalled since 2010. People await the arrival of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at his hotel in New York, June 23, 2024, as he prepares to undergo knee surgery. (Adam GRAY/AFP) …
