Migrant Boat Capsizes While Crossing River From Serbia to Bosnia, At Least 8 Drown

At least eight people drowned after a boat carrying migrants capsized while crossing the Drina river from Serbia to Bosnia, officials in the two Balkan countries said Thursday (8/22). Serbian police received a call at around 5 a.m. from their Bosnian counterparts and a citizen reporting the accident, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said. Dacic said 18 migrants, including three children, managed to cross to Bosnia, out of 25 who were on board when the boat capsized. “Police and rescue teams are continuing the search in the Drina river and the surrounding area,” Dacic said in a statement. Dacic said that of the 18 migrants who managed to reach the shore, 16 were from Syria and two from Egypt. They included 10 minors.
