Iraq to Impose Curfew for First Census in 27 Years

Iraqi authorities announced Sunday (1/9) that they would impose a two-day curfew in November to conduct the country's first census in 27 years. “A curfew will be imposed across all Iraqi provinces on November 20 and 21, to conduct a population census,” Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani said in a statement. Torn by conflict and violence for decades, Iraq has postponed its population census several times, most notably in 2010 due to communal tensions over disputed territory. The last general census was held in 1997 in 15 Iraqi provinces, excluding the three northern provinces that make up the autonomous region of Kurdistan. Iraq has regained stability in recent years, despite sporadic violence and political turmoil. Current estimates put Iran's population at around 43 million. Authorities are partnering with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to conduct the upcoming census. The initiative “plays a critical role in equipping Iraq with accurate demographic information, facilitating effective policy-making, and promoting inclusive growth,” the agency said. Iraq previously held a population census every 10 years. The count could not be conducted in 2007, when the country was embroiled in sectarian violence. (ps/ab)
