UNICEF Opens Tender for Procurement of Mpox Vaccine

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) or UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), announced on Saturday (8/31) that it is opening an emergency tender for the procurement of the mpox vaccine. The vaccine will be used to help countries most affected by the latest outbreak of the disease. “This emergency tender aims to ensure rapid access to available mpox vaccines while scaling up production,” UNICEF said in a statement released jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Gavi vaccine alliance, and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Depending on demand, manufacturers' production capacity and funding, a deal for up to 12 million doses by 2025 could be possible,” he said. Based on the emergency tender, UNICEF plans to enter into conditional supply agreements with vaccine manufacturers. The conditional supply agreement “will allow UNICEF to purchase and deliver vaccines without delay once countries and partners secure financing, confirm demand and readiness, and ensure that regulatory requirements for receiving vaccines are met.” WHO declared a state of international emergency on August 14 over concerns about the rise in cases of the Clade 1b variant of mpox that originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
