Pope Fly to Indonesia to Kick Off Asia Tour

Pope Francis is undertaking the longest, furthest and most challenging journey of his papacy when he visits Asia and Oceania this week. The pope will travel 32,814 kilometers by plane during his Sept. 2-13 visit to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Singapore. The trip surpasses his previous 44 foreign trips and is one of the longest papal trips ever, both in terms of time and distance. For a pope who will turn 88 in December, this trip is no small feat. Pope Francis, who was confined to a wheelchair and lost part of a lung to a respiratory infection as a young man, had to cancel his last foreign trip to Dubai in November 2023 on doctor's orders. But this time Pope Francis is still going ahead with his travel plans. The trip to Asia and Oceania was originally scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the widespread spread of COVID-19. On this trip, the Pope is also bringing his medical team, consisting of a doctor and two nurses. He has also taken the usual health precautions in the field.
