VOLOS, Greece — More than 100 tonnes of fish carcasses have been collected in and around the port of Volos in central Greece, after a mass death of freshwater fish linked to extreme weather changes, authorities said Thursday. The fish carcasses have filled the 320-kilometer (200-mile) wide bay north of Athens and surrounding rivers, with water levels rising due to flooding in 2023, following months of severe drought. The incident has hit local businesses along the seafront hard, which, according to the Volos Chamber of Commerce, has reduced commercial activity by 80 percent in the past three days. Fishing vessels have been hired by local authorities, together with EarthMovers, to collect the fish carcasses from the sea and load them onto trucks bound for the incinerator. The fish come from Lake Karla in Central Greece, which was drained in the early 1960s and restored in 2018 to combat the effects of drought.
