PANAMA CITY — Panamanian authorities deported a group of migrants to Ecuador on a second flight funded by the United States, as part of a deal between the U.S. and Panama to prevent illegal crossings and reduce migration flows that are mostly headed to the United States. The flight, Panama's migration service said, took off Thursday night for the coastal city of Manta, Ecuador, carrying 30 Ecuadorians. The migrants were deported for evading a migration checkpoint on the popular Darien Gap route. Thousands of people each year cross the dangerous Darien Gap jungle on Panama's border with Colombia on their way to the United States. The flight on Thursday (29/8), followed a previous trip funded by Washington in mid-August, which returned about 30 migrants to Colombia. The deportations came days after Panamanian President Jose Mulino announced flights home for Indian migrants in September and for Chinese nationals but did not specify a date. (es/dw)
