China, Philippines Blame Each Other Over Ship Collision Incident in South China Sea

The Philippines and China accused each other of deliberately ramming a naval vessel in disputed waters in the South China Sea on Saturday, escalating tensions in a series of escalating clashes in the contested waters. The clash around the Sabina Shoals marked their fifth maritime confrontation in a month, prolonging a long-running feud. Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, including areas also claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. The waterway, through which $3 trillion in trade passes each year, is believed to have rich reserves of oil, natural gas and fisheries. The Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled in 2016 that China's expansive claims had no legal basis, but Beijing has rejected the ruling. Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Jay Tarriela played video of the confrontation that occurred Saturday at a press conference, claiming that the Chinese Coast Guard vessel 5205 “directly and intentionally rammed the Philippine vessel” without any provocation.
